Turning The Tables
Want peace? Add Women.
Women have answers to the complex and interlocking needs that underpin the absence of peace most people experience today. The world at large benefits in concrete and lasting ways when we bring our wisdom and our distinct perspective to the peace table. Turning the Tables, Peace X Peace’s signature advocacy campaign, will bring women's wisdom to negotiating tables and policymaking dialogues – peace by peace. The result: decisions that build sustainable peace on a foundation of equity.
Where is this program happening?
In 2009, the campaign focuses on Israel and the Palestinian Territories, an area that has been in conflict since before the founding of the Jewish state in 1948. The links below, suggested by our good friends Len and Libby Traubman, offer valuable guidelines for listening to different narratives and understanding the context for how people live today in this critical region:
Palestinian and Israeli women alike tell us that peace IS possible if their perspectives are heard and honored by both sides. You can see what they have to say in Patricia Smith Melton’s book Sixty Years, Sixty Voices, and hear some of them speak in this set of YouTube videos:

What does it do?
This year, Peace X Peace Liaisons are working with women on the ground to produce a set of recommendations that will be formally presented to policymakers and shared with the media, the heads of NGOs, and other national and international stakeholders.
Why is this needed?
Our years of experience in connecting women around the world show that when we are included in peace processes, the larger community benefits. Yet women continue to be under-valued and under-represented in governments and formal peacebuilding processes. According to a 2008 UNIFEM report, women hold just 18.4% of parliamentary seats worldwide. And even where women have equal numerical representation, they are largely excluded from such traditionally male-led sectors as international relations. UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security and Goal 3 of the Millennium Development Goals both commit the world’s nations to ensuring our equal participation in peacebuilding.
Let’s claim our places at the table today!
