Thoughts about Money and Friendship

The primary purpose of Peace X Peace is to connect women globally to build friendships that bring feminine principles to the world and that make for peace. Peace X Peace membership is free. Sometimes questions arise within relationships about funding projects or exchanging money outright between Global Network connections. Each match makes its own decision about how to handle any money questions that arise. We have some hints based on experience for you to consider as you journey with your sisters.

  • Be clear about why your Global Network relationship exists. After a period of getting to know each other, consider creating a covenant together that will affirm the purpose of your friendship. (To see a sample covenant, click here)
  • Check periodically that the activities and decisions within your connection are geared toward strengthening the bonds of friendship. Focus on mutual learning as you share your lives with one another.
  • The members of many sister connections are living in impoverished circumstances. Hearing their true stories is deeply moving and touches our hearts. Keep in mind that providing financial support both opens and closes doors. It opens doors in some cases, such as when a Circle of individual connection provides seed money for micro-enterprise. But it can also close the door to a more mutual relationship, because it sets up a dynamic of inequality and dependency.

When one party provides funds to another, a donor-recipient relationship is established. A power shift occurs within the relationship. We encourage you to weigh this reality against the good that can be done when you offer financial help. Look at our Circle Principles guide as a foundation for shared responsibility, leadership, and equity in your relationship.

If there are several Global Network connections within a given community, and one or more connections receive financial assistance while others do not, the fabric of unity within that community may be disrupted.

  • Peace X Peace, as an organization, does not facilitate the transmitting or exchange of funds between Global Network connections. If a Circle or individual wishes to make financial arrangements with Peace X Peace members, this must be handled according to the agreement of the parties themselves.  Peace X Peace is not responsible for any communication, decisions or outcomes in this regard.

Peace X Peace is always open to hearing your experiences and opinions. Please feel free to contact Liora Herman at liora@peacexpeace.org

OTHER (AND PERHAPS MORE MEANINGFUL) WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR SISTER MATCH WHEN THEY NEED FINANCIAL SUPPORT

  • Research funding sources through the internet and share what you learn.
  • Help your sister connection complete the grant application you have discovered.
  • Open up other organizational possibilities that may seem obvious to you, but unknown to them. This may be the single best way you can support them.
  • Make arrangements for your sister connection to send handcrafts you can sell in your own community, then send the profits back to them.
  • Check back with this page. We will be adding information on organizations that offer funds for women's global projects, world craft wholesaling and retailing.

Peace X Peace will be happy to post contact information on funding organizations that you have researched, along with their mission and the kinds of projects that they fund. Please send your research to Liora Herman, liora@peacexpeace.org
